Unfortunately, if I recall Sony cheaped out on the laser diode in the slimline PS2s, where as I have a friend with a phat PS2 that still reads discs. Note that not all games will run properly off an HDD, either due to there not being enough bandwidth on the USB1.1 ports or because of copy protection being decently good enough to prevent the games from running this way. SCPH-39001 are supposed to have long usable lives while SCPH-30001 are supposed to have been ticking time bombs from the moment they released. I reckon I can still use the safefiles of my games on my memory card with this method. Would you recommend trying that first, before I dive into repairing or FreeMcBoot. Then you can play them off a storage drive, or try booting them off the network, but honestly Ive never had any success with this, nor has USB 1.1 given me enough issues to justify spending more time trying to mount the ISO over the network. I took the thing apart, removed all traces of the mod and put it back together. I got rid of that one as I had an earlier Slim that had proven to be more reliable.
